Portraits in Focus – Christchurch Portrait Painters’ Group: 3 – 29 November

posted in: Eastside Gallery, Past | 0

For over two decades, this dedicated group of artists has gathered weekly in Opawa to explore the art of portraiture. Working across pencil, pastel, oil, acrylic, and watercolour, members range from emerging talents to award-winning practitioners – each bringing their own style, experience, and curiosity.

The group thrives on shared insight and quiet exchange, learning through observation, conversation, and the rhythm of practice. Sitters, invited from all walks of life, often bring personal objects and stories, resulting in portraits that are as varied as they are intimate.

This exhibition showcases recent works by 11 artists that reflect the spontaneity, generosity, and interpretive richness of the group’s sessions. It’s a celebration of likeness, difference, and the enduring power of looking closely.

Together – Art for Wellbeing, Canterbury Cancer Society: 20 October – 1 November

posted in: Eastside Gallery, Past | 0

Opening Event: 5.30-7pm Monday 20 October. All welcome.

This group exists to serve people affected by cancer and to foster their wellbeing through the arts.

The artists attend for support with their individual art practices, for mutual peer support during their cancer journeys, as a respite from the medical focus of cancer treatment, and for the group’s warm, accepting atmosphere. Each session is a joyful coming-together of people with a cancer diagnosis who make art, and in doing so enter and explore a world outside their cancer journey in a way that is highly beneficial to wellbeing.

Location: 388 Worcester St, free parking and entry.

NO LIMITS – the art of us: 6-18 October 2025

posted in: Eastside Gallery, Past | 0

Opening Event: 5.30-7pm Monday 6 October. All welcome.

“NO LIMITS – the art of us” features works by talented students who attend classes at Art for Life Trust, a Christchurch based charitable organisation providing inclusive art classes for students with disabilities and other diverse needs. Their classes are a place where art is not just taught but lived. It is a place of acceptance, friendship and support to embrace creativity.

The show is a celebration of courage, joy and each artist’s unique individuality and approach to painting and drawing.

20 students bring their whole selves to their work and each piece is a reflection of passions, perspectives and stories, from places they have visited to the things they love. It brings together a vibrant collection of art and a shared authenticity.

We invite you to experience these works not only with your eyes, but with your heart. Let them surprise you, move you, and remind you that creativity belongs to everyone.

Location: 388 Worcester St, free parking and entry.

New Extended Opening Hours: Tue-Thu: 11am-5pm | Fri-Sat: 10am-5pm
