Eastside’s annual show for emerging and mid-career artists features painting, photography, fused glass and life-sized needle-felted sculptures from six exciting local artists.

The show features recent oil on canvas works from Meg Maguire, who won the “Eastside Development Award” at this year’s Arts Canterbury Juried Show. She will exhibit a substantial body of work from her Minotaur series.

This is the top show of our “progressive pathway” exhibitions (“First Steps” – “Stride by Stride” – “Eastside Spring”).

Artists: Deanna Gracie, Graeme Russell, Jackie Hancock, Lauren Taylor, Meg Maguire and Nina Cook.

Inner City to East School Seniors: 18 August – 6 September 2025

Enjoy works by the next generation of Christchurch artists in Eastside’s annual “Inner City to East School Seniors” show.

69 NCEA students from six schools across the inner city to the east present recent works, most of which will go into NCEA portfolios. The schools include: Avonside Girls’ High School, Christchurch Rudolf Steiner School, Hagley College, Mairehau High School, Shirley Boys’ High School and Te Aratai College.

You can also see works by younger pupils from Christchurch East School in the Mini Gallery.

Strange Materials 2025: 21 July – 16 August

Strange and fascinating artworks made either with unusual materials or with common materials not normally used in the making of art. Come and see what 11 local artists have created using false teeth and eyelashes, toilet paper, weeds, washing powder, kitchen spices, cellphones and ipads, an old-fashioned telephone, water pipes, possum fur and much more.

Artists: Anthea Merrin (of Ramloët), Aunty Trace, Cathy Pollock, Don McAra, Emily Speed, George Bassett-Smith, John Clare, Margot Christeller, Nina Cook, Roger McArthur and Viktoria MOONVI Karaman.

Te Whare Maire o nga Punawerewere 2025: 23 June – 19 July

This group show is a celebration of the mahi of local Māori artists making Māori art. The name literally refers to young spiders leaving the web and metaphorically refers to the way Eastside Gallery’s exhibition programme nurtures artists in their developing art practice.

Artists include: Antonia de Lautour, Deanna Morgan, Joe Clarke, Redgie Walker-Small, Samantha Plunkett, Selena Tapae, Sierra Bright, Tipene Douglas and Tui Martin. Aroha Pene will be in the Mini Gallery.
